What is smudging?
Smudging is a powerful cleansing technique that has been a Native American tradition for thousands of years. Smudging is burning smoke from sage and other herbs like cedar and sweet grass to remove negative energy to restore balance and harmony. It is the art of cleansing yourself and your space.
How to Smudge
You will need a Sage smudge stick, an abalone shell or small, flat, heat-proof container to catch the ambers and a large feather (optional). You will also, want to open as many doors and windows as possible to allow the release of the smoke and unwanted energies.
Before I smudge my space I like to smudge myself. To get started light the sage and let it flame for a minute or so. Extinguish the flame so the sage is smoldering and smoking. Then with the swirls of smoke you want to start with the bottoms of your feet moving in a clockwise circular motion working your way to the top of your head. As you do this focus your attention to those parts of your body where you feel there are blockages or where you have physical, emotional, or psychic pain. Imagine the smoke lifting away all the negative thoughts, emotions and energies that have attached themselves to you.
The Native American custom is to use a very large feather from a poultry bird, such as a turkey. If you have a feather fan the smoke all around the room especially corners of the room, doorways, and windows. If you don't have a feather that's okay just permeate the space with the smoke. As I smudge myself and my space I like to say a prayer asking that all negative and unwanted energies, entities and anything that is not 100% divine love and light be released from within me and in this space now. This space and I are now filled with those things for my highest good and divine love and light.
You can do this for the whole house, a room, your office and your car. Its best to start at the lowest part of the house and work your way up to the top. You want the smoke to fill the space paying close attention to the corners, windows and doorways. I like to keep as many doors and windows open as possible to release the smoke and unwanted energies and allowing fresh air and chi to enter the space and home.
That's it! It's amazing how quickly it works and how much lighter and brighter you and your space feel. Smudging can be done as often as you like. It is best to do especially after an argument, illness, or during stressful situations. So, when your are stressed out, run down, grumpy, and things don't seem to be going as you would like them to be then smudge and see what happens. Remember their is no wrong way of doing it so relax and have fun.
After I smudge myself or my space I like to do drumming to help break up any residual negative energy that may be left behind.
